What is the wisdom behind the creation of women?

The Details of the Question

- What is the wisdom behind Allah’s creation of women?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

How should we answer the question, “What is the wisdom behind the creation of men?”

Therefore, it is more appropriate to think about the wisdom behind the creation of all beings as a whole, not just women.

“I have only created Jinn and men, that they may serve Me.” (adh-Dhariyat, 51/56)

In the verse above, attention is drawn to the wisdom behind the creation of humans and jinn, especially of conscious beings. As Ibn Abbas points out, the word “worship (serve)” here also means “knowledge”.

It is unthinkable to worship Allah without knowing Him. Worship is a manifestation of respect and love.

“I was a hidden treasure; I wanted to be known; so, I created the creatures, and they recognized Me through Me.” (Ajluni, Kashful-Khafa, II/132; Asnal-Matalib, 1/221)

The hadith above, which is reported to be sound in terms of its meaning even though its chain of narrators is weak, draws attention to the wisdom behind the creation of the universe.

“O man! In the face of manifestations of lordship, the elevated purpose of the universe is man’s universal worship and submission to God, while his furthest aim is to attain to that worship by means of those sciences and perfections.” (Sözler, 20. Söz)

As it is understood from Badiuzzaman Said Nursi’s statement above, the purpose of the creation of the universe, especially Allah’s creation of the universe as Lord is the appearance of the wondrous manifestations of His Names and Attributes that emerge through His will and management of it, and the fulfillment of the duties of servitude by men to Allah, who is seen to possess these wondrous Names and Attributes, in the most perfect sense.

Since the greatest purpose of the creation of the universe is the servitude and worship of human beings, it is necessary for them to increase and establish a human community and a human civilization.

It is possible only through human reproduction and production. This production can only be realized if there is a factory to produce human beings. The wheels of men and women are necessary for this factory to work according to its purpose.

The wisdom behind the creation of human beings as men and women depends on the realization of such truths.

Allah’s planning of humanity in this way testifies to His infinite knowledge, wisdom and power:

“O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you.” (al-Hujurat, 49/13)
