Drawing on Computer
Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Is it permissible to create digital images and 3D models of living things on a computer using software like Photoshop and Blender? I have read that there is ikhtilaf on digital images. Jazakhallahu khayr.
Dear Brother / Sister,
It is permissible to follow the opinion that drawing pictures is allowed, provided that they do not contain obscene content or themes of shirk and disbelief (such as idols and objects of worship).
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), great caution was exercised regarding images, and certain prohibitions were established. However, the primary reason for this strictness and the broad scope of those prohibitions was to protect the pure faith of a community that had only recently emerged from idolatry and to safeguard their belief in the One God.
At that time, those who produced images were generally making pictures and statues of idols, and those who commissioned them desired such representations.
Accordingly, it may be said that creating images, virtual characters, animations, and similar works that do not contradict Islamic beliefs, rulings, or moral values—and are not produced with the intention of veneration or sanctification—is not prohibited.
