Is it true that when we make wudu, minor sins will move away as the water flows away from the body?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The following verse indicates that wudu is fard in Islam:

"O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles...." (al-Maida, 5/6),

We see that the Prophet (pbuh) did not do anything without making wudu. (Elmalılı, Hak Dini Kur'ân Dili, II/1583) However, wudu is not fard for all deeds; it is fard for certain deeds of worshipping, primarily prayer (salah). However, it is sunnah for a Muslim to have wudu all the time.

Wudu is a deed of worshipping that Islam orders in order to get rid of all kinds of dirt and impurities, that is, all material and spiritual impurities and microbes. The place where microbes reproduce the most easily is the mouth. Cleaning the mouth hands, face and feet five times a day shows the importance Islam gives to cleanliness. Thus, Islam aimed to purify man of all material and spiritual impurities and microbes by emphasizing cleanliness hundreds of years ago.

In addition, a person who makes wudu feels spiritually clean and relaxed; he starts worshipping Allah with this nice and clean feeling. This ensures spiritual cleanliness. When worshipping, which is the purpose of the creation of man, starts with such a deed of cleanliness, the value of the pleasure and relaxation it will give man is endless.

After man is cleaned bodily and spiritually, he enters into the presence of Allah. With such cleaning, he leaves behind all of the tiredness and burdens of the day.

Many worldly and otherworldly virtues and beauties are obtained by making wudu.   Hz. Prophet (pbuh) states the following about wudu:

"When a Muslim makes wudu and washes his face, all of the sins committed by the organs on his face and when he washes his hands and feet, all of the sins committed by his hands and feet leave as the water drops  leave his body; and he becomes pure and clean. Even the sins in the eyelashes and nails disappear. The doors of Paradise are opened for a slave makes wudu properly and says by turning toward the qiblah, 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluhu'."(Muslim, Taharah, 32, 33; Tirmidhi, Taharah, 2)
