Is it permissible to fill a receptacle with water and to make wudu by dipping the hand in it?

The Details of the Question

It is said that the water dripping from organs is not clean; we put our hands in the receptacle all the time.

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Yes, it is permissible. The hand can be used as a mug. However, if the hand is dirty, it has to be washed first. Then, that clean hand can be used as a mug. The water that drips from the hand into the receptacle does not harm the cleanliness and purifying property of the water.

Humran, the slave of Uthman, narrates:

"Hz. Uthman asked for water. I brought it and he took it. He poured water over his hands and washed them three times. Then, he put his right hand in the water container, rinsed his mouth, washed his nose by putting water in it and blowing it out. Then, he washed his face and forearms up to the elbows three times. Then, he passed his wet hands over his head and washed his feet up to the ankles three times. Then he said,

‘I saw the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) make wudu like this. When he finished wudu, he said,

'If anyone performs wudu like that of mine and offers a two-rak’ah prayer during which he does not say any worldly words, his past sins will be forgiven.'" (Bukhari, Wudu 24, 28; Muslim, Taharah 3, 4, (226); Abu Dawud, Taharah 50, (106); Nasai, Taharah 27, 28)
