Is it permissible to read verses of the Quran in ruku’ and sajdah?

The Details of the Question

- Did the Prophet (pbuh) say, "I was prohibited from reading the Quran in ruku and sajdah."?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Ibn Abbas narrates:

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,

"Know that I was prohibited from reading the Quran in ruku and sajdah. Therefore, extol God Almighty in ruku’ and try to say supplications in sajdah because supplication in prayer deserves to be accepted more." [Muslim, Salah 207 (479); Abu Dawud, Salah 152, (876); Nasai, Iftitah 98, (2, 189).]

1. It is stated in some narrations that verses of the Quran are not read in ruku’ and sajdah. Hadith scholars explains the reason for it as follows:

"The states of ruku’ and sajdah express the humility of the slave in the presence of his Lord. Therefore, those states are allocated to dhikr. Thus, it is makruh to regard the words of Allah and the words of beings as similar and utter them together."

2. By saying, "... I was prohibited from reading the Quran in ruku’ and sajdah" the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) does not express a prohibition peculiar to him but a prohibition that his ummah has to obey because his ummah has to follow the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) in all his deeds – except for some rare private issues. Besides, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) ordered his Companions to extol Allah in ruku’ and to say supplications in sajdah. This order shows that the prohibition is not limited to the Prophet only but that it encompasses the whole ummah. To sum up, it is forbidden to read the Quran in ruku’ and sajdah. Glorification is made in ruku’ and glorification is made and supplications are said in sajdah.

3. According to Hanafis, sajdah as-sahw becomes necessary if a deed from the deeds of prayer is added in a rukn (part) of the prayer because the delay of wajib or fard is in question. According to Shafiis, it is makruh to read any chapters or verses other than al-Fatiha in ruku’ and sajdah but prayer is not invalidated.

4. As for reading al-Fatiha, two views are reported from Shafiis regarding the issue: According to one view, there is no difference between al-Fatiha and any other chapter. Therefore, it is makruh to read al-Fatiha too but it does not invalidate prayer. According to the second view, it is haram to real al-Fatiha deliberately in ruku’ and sajdah and it invalidates prayer. It is not makruh to read al-Fatiha by mistake. However, whether al-Fatiha is read by mistake or deliberately, sajdah as-sahw becomes necessary according to Imam Shafii. (see Kütüb-ü Sitte Şerhi, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Canan, Vol. 16-17)

5. It is makruh to read the Quran in ruku’, sajdah and sitting for tahiyyat but what is meant by the words of the Quran read at the end of the prayer is supplication, not qiraah; therefore, it is permissible. (Nimatul-Islam, p. 185)
