Is it necessary to remember the intention up to the end of the prayer? I intend for the prayer but after I utter takbir (Allahu akbar), I don't remember anything about which prayer I am performing. Should I continue to pray in this manner or break it?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Intention is the decision of the heart for something and its knowing the purpose of that deed without thinking about it. And the intention of prayer is wishing to perform it just for the sake of Allah and knowing which prayer is going to be performed and considering it by heart. Intention belongs to the heart. In addition to this, uttering the intention with the tongue is considered better.
When a person starts praying by intending for a fard of a daily prayer and ends his prayer with an assumption that he is performing a nafilah (supererogatory) prayer, his prayer is accepted as fard. For, remembering the niyyah (intention) up to the end of prayer is not a necessity. Thus, you can continue to pray though you do not remember which prayer are you performing.
