Is touching the earlobes with the thumbs sunnah when uttering takbir (Allahu Akbar) at the beginning of prayer?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Raising the hands when uttering takbir (Allahu Akbar) at the beginning of prayer is sunnah according to the four sects. Touching the earlobes with the thumbs is not sunnah in any sects.
Raising the thumbs to the level of the earlobes is sunnah according to the Hanafi sect.
According to Shafiis, hands are raised to the level of the shoulders. However, Imam Navavi says the following while explaining this view of Shafiis: "That is, the fingers of the hand are raised to the upper level of the ear and thumbs are raised to the level of earlobe." (see. W. Zuhayli, al-Fiqhu'l-Islami, 1/683)
Then, it is Sunnah to raise the thumbs to the level of earlobes according to both madhabs (sects) but touching them is not sunnah.
