Does nasal discharge invalidate fasting?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Nasal discharge does not invalidate fasting according to both Hanafi and Shafi’i madhhabs because it goes directly from the head to the middle of the mouth.

According to Shafi’i madhhab, if the phlegm that comes to the middle of the mouth is swallowed intentionally and goes into the stomach, fasting is invalidated. However, if the person forgets that he is fasting or swallows it involuntarily, fasting is not invalidated. (see Shirbini, Mughnil-Muhtaj, 2/156)

According to Hanafi madhhab, swallowing phlegm that accumulates in the mouth, whether it comes from the nasal passage or from the throat, does not invalidate fasting. Although it does not invalidate fasting, it is more appropriate to try to expel the phlegm in a way that does not disturb anyone. Thus, both the possibility of harming health and causing disgust will be avoided; in addition, the person will have acted in accordance with the opinions of the scholars who say “Swallowing phlegm invalidates fasting”.
