What is the decree about reading Salli and Barik supplications in the first sitting of the prayer?

The Details of the Question

- What is the decree about reading salli barik supplications in the first sitting of a four-rak’ah fard prayer?
- What is the decree according to Shafii and Hanafi madhhabs?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

In the first sitting of the prayer:

According to Shafii madhhab, it is sunnah to say “Allahumma salli ala (sayyidina) Muhammad” in the first sitting; it is not sunnah to add “wa ala ali Muhammad”. (see W. Zuhayli, al-Fiqhul-Islami, 2/853)

- According to Hanafi madhhab, it is not sunnah to read the supplication of “Allahumma salli ala (sayyidina) Muhammad” after kalima ash-shahadah in the first sitting. If a person reads it by forgetting, he has to perform sajdah as-sahw. There are two views about the amount that necessitates sajdah as-sahw. According to the view that is regarded to be sounder, sajdah as-sahw becomes necessary when a person says, “Allahumma salli ala (sayyidina) Muhammad” and according to the other view, “wa ala ali Muhammad”. (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 1/113) If he reads it deliberately, his prayer is valid but it is wajib (not fard) for him to perform the prayer again. (see al-Jazari, al-Fiqhu alal-Medhahibil-Arbaa, 1/217)

It is suunah to read Salli-Barik supplications in the last sitting of the prayer according to Hanafis and Malikis whereas it is fard to say at least “Allahumma salli ala Muhammad” according to Shafiis and Hanbalis.

It is mustahab according to all madhhabs for a person who prays to read supplication texts chosen from the Quran and the sunnah after Salli-Barik supplications.
