Dear Brother / Sister,
According to Hanafi and Maliki madhhabs, it is sunnah to read “Salli-Barik” in the last sitting. According to Shafii and Hanbali madhhabs, it is a rukn, that is, fard. (see Wahba Zuhayli, al-Fiqhul-Islami, 2/850-852, 906)
According to Shafii and Hanbali madhhabs, the amount od salawat that is fard is «اللهم صل على محمد» “Allahumma salli ala Muhammad”. (see ibid, 2/855)
Their evidence is the following verse: “... O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect.” (al-Ahzab, 33/56)
The common form of salawat included in various sound narrations – though a bit different - are as follows in four madhhabs:
According to Hanafi madhhab, the most virtuous form of salawat is as follows: (see ibid 2/918):
According to Maliki madhhab, the most virtuous form of salawat is as follows: (see ibid 2/920):
According to Safii madhhab, the most perfect form of salawat is as follows: (see ibid 2/856):
The form of salawat in Hanbali madhhab is as it is included in the following hadith:
When a Companions asked the Prophet (pbuh) how to say salawat, the Prophet said, "Say as follows":
