Does chewing sugar-free gum invalidate fasting?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Chewing Gum While Fasting:

Although chewing gum is absolutely makruh, some fiqh scholars state that it is not makruh for workers who work in the fields and gardens or do heavy labor during the summer months to chew gum whose essence has been thoroughly removed.

Chewing gum whose essence has not been removed invalidates fasting. The chewing gum whose essence has been removed does not invalidate fasting but it is makruh. (Al-Muhit - Radiyuddin Sarakhsi - Fatawa Hindiyya; Celal Yıldırım, Kaynaklarıyla İslam Fıkhı, 2/212.)

The following conditions must be met for the chewing to be only makruh and not to invalidate fasting:

a. No sweetness, etc. must go into the stomach from the chewing gum with the wetness of the mouth.

b. It must be white chewing gum that has been chewed beforehand.

c. The chewing gum must not melt and dissolve in the mouth.

Chewing gum that does not meet the conditions above invalidates fasting.
