What is the decree about men wearing artificial silk?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Woven material that is not produced from the cocoon of silkworm is not silk, which is haram. If artificial silk is not what the silkworm produces and is made of some other substances, its name being silk does not render it haram.
As it is known, silk is the skill of a handless worm (see Şuâlar, p.192). It is necessary to meditate on this aspect of it; the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) prohibited men from using it as garment because it has signs of ornament and conceit. (Muslim, Libas 15; Ibn Majah, Libas: 19)
Artificial silk is produced from other substances; therefore, it is not regarded as pure silk; however, it is not permissible to wear it with the intention of conceit, pride and show off. However, if there is no such intention, it becomes permissible to wear artificial silk.
