Is it permissible to sit at a table where pork is eaten and alcohol is drunk?
Dear Brother / Sister,
In general, one must keep away from places where haram (forbidden) acts are committed. When invited to such gatherings, it is better to decline politely and explain, in an appropriate manner, that attending is problematic from an Islamic perspective. Sitting at a table where haram is being committed is not permissible.
Therefore, unless there is an absolute necessity or compulsion, Muslims should avoid sitting in places where alcohol is consumed or pork is eaten; they should not share the same environment with those drinking alcohol or eating pork, and they should show their disapproval by leaving.
As stated in the hadith, it is not permissible for a Muslim to sit at such a table.
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should never sit at a table where alcohol is being consumed.” (Ahmad b. Hanbal, 1/20)
Moreover, according to Islam, if someone witnesses an act that is forbidden (munkar), they should try to stop it with their hand; if they are unable to do that, then by speaking against it; and if they cannot even do that, then at least by feeling dislike and disapproval in their heart. (see: Muslim, Iman 78)
Islamic scholars explain that intervening with the hand or physical power is the duty of the authorities; advising and speaking against wrong is the duty of scholars; and feeling disapproval in the heart is the responsibility of everyone. Generally, if ordinary people like us find ourselves forced to be in such environments, then—insha’Allah—merely being present there under compulsion will not count as a sin.
If, out of necessity and compulsion, we must be in such a place—such as sitting at a table where pork is being served—our duty is to feel inward disgust and disapproval at witnessing a sinful act and to be conscious that we are sitting there unwillingly.
