Does wearing make-up invalidate wudu?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

If make-up is worn after making wudu, wudu is valid but if there is any substance that is regarded as impure in the make-up material, it will prevent the prayer since there will be impurity on the body of that person.

It is necessary to be careful about two things related to performing prayers after wearing make-up: Firstly, the materials used in the make-up and the cosmetics must not include any dirty and harmful substances and they must allow water to pass through and touch the skin. If there is impurity in the make-up and if it does not allow water to pass through and touch the skin, a person cannot perform a prayer in that state; it must be removed at once.

Secondly, if a woman wears make-up, she must not show it to anybody except her husband and her non-mahram men about whom she can trust (like her son, father and brother). If she appears before non-mahram men like that and goes out like that, she leads non-mahram men to sin.

Nail polish is related to wudu before prayer. As it is known, water has to touch the outer parts of wudu organs for wudu to be valid. If the substance that is spread on the wudu organs prevents water from touching them, wudu is not valid. When nail polish is spread on the nail, it prevents water from touching the surface of the nail. For instance, it is stated in fiqh books clearly that wax prevents wudu. Wudu is not valid if wax is not removed; similarly, wudu is not valid if nail polish is not removed.
