Do permanent make-up and tattoos applied today prevent wudu? Are they permissible?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is necessary to pay attention to two issues whether prayers can be performed after applying make-up.

Firstly, the materials used in make-up must not contain any dirty and harmful substances and they must allow water to penetrate under it. If the make-up contains a dirty substance and does not allow water to penetrate under it, prayers cannot be performed like that. It must be removed at once because the wudu made like that is not valid.

Secondly, if a woman wears make-up, she must not show it to anybody except her husband and her mahram relatives whom she can trust (like her son, father and brother). If she appears before non-mahram men like that and goes out like that, she will cause people to commit sins.

Nail polish is related to wudu before prayer. As it is known, it is necessary for water to contact the outer parts of wudu organs for wudu to become valid. If the thing that is applied on wudu organs prevents water from contacting the wudu organs, wudu is not valid. When nail polish is applied all over the nail, it prevents water from going under it. For instance, it is clearly stated in fiqh books that wax prevents wudu. Wudu is not valid if wax is not removed; similarly, wudu is not valid if nail polish is not removed.

Is it permissible to have a tattoo done? Is it necessary to remove the tattoo? Do tattoos harm ghusl, wudu and other worships?
