Can prayers (salat) be performed in a church?
Dear Brother / Sister,
According to the majority of the Islamic scholars and Ibn Abbas, it is makruh (abominable) to perform prayers in synagogues, churches and similar places where unbelievers worship. It does not matter whether these temples are used or in a ruinous state. However, it is not makruh to perform prayers there due to some reasons like cold weather, hot weather, rain, fear of enemy and fear of wild animals.
The reason why it is makruh to perform prayers in churches and synagogues is that they are shelters of devils. For, there are pictures and statues in those buildings. They are also places of mischief and bid'ah; therefore, one cannot perform prayers peacefully there.
According to Hanbalis, it is not makruh to perform prayers in a clean church.
