Can we talk after making niyyah and before uttering takbir al-iftitah? Is it permissible to speak between niyyah and prayer?

The Details of the Question

We make niyyah while praying in congregation during iqamah. For instance, if we make niyyah when muezzin says "hayya alal falah", can we repeat the remaining words of adhan "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; la ilaha illallah" after muezzin? I used to repeat them; if it is not appropriate to repeat, are my previous prayers harmed?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is necessary not to include anything that is contrary to prayer between niyyah and takbir; niyyah must be adjacent to prayer. The intervention that is forbidden is related to things that are not appropriate to do in prayer like eating, drinking and talking. However, if the intervention is related to prayer like making wudu and to walk to the front row (rank), it is permissible. (az-Zuhayli, al-Fiqhul-Islami wa Adillatuh, I, 611; Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen, Büyük İslâm İlmihali, İstanbul 1959, p. 156, et al; "Namaz" item)

It is more virtuous for niyyah to be close to the time of takbir. It is possible to make niyyah before but there must not be anything that is contrary to prayer between niyyah and takbir.

For instance, if a person makes niyyah to perform any prayer while making wudu and goes to the place of prayer without doing anything contrary to prayer like eating, drinking and talking, and starts to perform that prayer, his prayer is valid. Even if he does not remember that niyyah at that moment, his prayer is valid.

What is forbidden after making niyyah is worldly speech. It is permissible to say adhan prayer or any other supplication and to repeat the words of muezzin. They do not harm prayer.
