How can you tell what time to start and break your fast for Ramadan?

Why do our local masjid insist on keeping the fast at 3.30 when the sun rise is not un til 5.30 and that is when you can see the white thread of dawn according to this bukhari hadith?? am i in big trouble if i stick to the sunnah of our prophet (saw) or should i stick with the masjid and will my fast be rejected?... jazakallah The Answer
