Which nafilah prayers apart from tarawih prayer can be performed in congregation? How should we make intention (niyyah) for them?
Dear Brother / Sister,
According to Hanafi madhhab, it is regarded makruh to perform nafilah prayers except tarawih, kusuf (solar eclipse) and khusuf (lunar eclipse) prayers in congregation.
When nafilah prayers are performed in congregation, it is necessary to make intention (niyyah) to follow the imam.
It is more virtuous for nafilah prayers to be performed alone. This is the general decree but there is an exceptional decree based on some conditions:
It is permissible to perform tasbih prayer, which cannot be performed easily by some people alone, in congregation by some people who are sitting together without inviting and informing one another beforehand by making one of them the imam. (Mehmed Emre, Günümüz Meselelerine Açıklamalı Fetvalar, 1320)
When tasbih prayer is performed in congregation, the imam reads aloud and repeats tasbihat aloud. (Ibn Abidin, Raddul-Muhtar, Egypt 1966, II/27)
