At least how many people are necessary to perform tasbih prayer? Can it be performed with two people: one imam and a person following the imam?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Yes, it is possible to perform tasbih prayer with two people: one imam and a person following the imam. It can also be performed alone. It is more virtuous for nafilah prayers to be performed alone.

This is the general decree but there is an exceptional decree based on some conditions:

It is permissible to perform tasbih prayer, which cannot be performed easily by some people alone, in congregation by some people who are sitting together without inviting and informing one another beforehand by making one of them the imam. (Mehmed Emre, Günümüz Meselelerine Açıklamalı Fetvalar, 1320)

When tasbih prayer is performed in congregation, the imam reads aloud and repeats tasbihat aloud. (Ibn Abidin, Raddul-Muhtar, Egypt 1966, 2/27)

There is not a certain time for tasbih prayer. It can be performed any time except karahah times. It can be performed as four rak’ahs as a whole prayer or in two plus two rak'ahs by saluting after the second rak'ah. (see Wahba az-Zuhayli, al-Fiqhul-Islami wa Adillatuhu, Damascus, 1984, II, 49)
