What is the wisdom behind the prophets’ damning/cursing? Is it not a fault for them?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Prophets do not do anything without the consent and permission of Allah. If they make any mistakes, they are corrected by Allah. From this point of view, the damning/cursing by prophets should be considered related to the consent of Allah and the manifestations of qadar.

When Allah wanted to punish the deniers who insisted on denying His verses and prophets, He sometimes inspired His prophets to damn them and showed that damning as an apparent cause of that punishment.

This practice is important in that Allah answers the requests of His prophets and values them highly.

It is necessary to evaluate the following damning by Hz. Nuh (Noah) within this framework:

“O my Lord! Leave not of the Unbelievers, a single one on earth!” (Nuh, 71/26)

The reason for this damning is also important: “For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.” (Nuh, 71/27)

Besides, Hz. Nuh invited his nation to the true path patiently for hundreds of years; he damned his nation after learning from the following divine revelation that they would not believe:

“It was revealed to Noah: ‘None of thy people will believe except those who have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds. But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood).’” (Hud,11/36-37)

We should state that every prophet, especially the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), always prayed to Allah for the guidance of their nations in principle, not for their destruction.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not damn even his polytheistic tribe, who tried to kill him and to eliminate his cause, and who killed 70 of his Companions and his beloved uncle Hz. Hamza in the Battle of Uhud; on the contrary, he prayed for them as follows:

“O Allah! They are ignorant; forgive them.” (Bukhari, Anbiya, 54; Muslim, Jihad,104)
