What is the decree about saying bismillahi… before reading? Is it necessary to say bismillahi… before reading or mentioning a verse and to end it by saying Amin?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Audhubillahiminashshaytanirrajim and bismillahirrahmanirrahim… are said before reading a chapter. According to the majority of scholars, only audhu… is said before reading a verse; it is not necessary to say bismillahi.… For instance, one does not have to say bismillahi… before reading ayatul-kursiyy, amanarrasulu and huwallahulladhi. It is enough to say only audhu… One can also say bismillahi… after it.

It is wajib to say audhu… before starting reading a chapter or a verse. It is sunnah to say bismillahi… before starting reading a chapter.

It is sunnah to say bismillahi… before al-Fatiha in prayer and it is wajib to say bismillahi… before al-Fatiha outside prayer. According to Shafii madhhab, it is always fard to say bismillahi… before reading al-Fatiha.

However, if you read the chapters and verses that you know by heart with the intention of prayer (dua), you do not have to say audhu… bismillahi… before reading them.

It is sunnah to say Amin after al-Fatiha in prayer. It is better to say bismillahi… before starting a dua but it is not compulsory.
