Is it necessary to utter “basmala” while reading the Quran or while reading some verses by heart?

The Details of the Question

There are some verses that I know by heart. I read those verses on the way. I sometimes do not utter basmala; is it permissible?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

"Audhu and basmala" are read before reading a chapter (surah). According to the majority of scholars, only "audhu" is read before reading a verse (ayah); it is not necessary to read "basmala". For instance, one does not have to say "basmala" before reading some verses like "Ayat al-kursi", "Amanarrasulu", "Huwallahulladhi"; it is enough to say audhu…

It is wajib to say audhu… before starting to read a chapter or a verse. If another chapter is read additionally, it is Sunnah to say only "basmala" before that chapter.

It is Sunnah to utter "basmala" before al-Fatiha in prayer and it is wajib to utter "basmala" before al-Fatiha outside prayer. It is always fard to utter "basmala" before al-Fatiha according to Shafii madhhab.

However, if you read the chapters and verses that you know by heart with the intention of dua (supplication), it is permissible not to utter "audhu basmala".
