What are (ayat al-hirz) verses of protection and what are their benefits?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Hirz (protection) means to be saved from the evil of beings like jinn and Satan, and disorders like diseases and misfortunes. The verses that are read with this intention are called "verses of hirz".

Those verses are read for seven days in order to be saved from the evil of jinn and Satan, epilepsy and magic; and a person can have them on him.

- However, the source of these verses - except very few of them – are based on the experience of righteous people rather than hadiths. As a matter of fact, Suyuti states the following regarding the issue:

“Most of the issues mentioned as ‘the khawass (miraculous properties) of the Quran’ are based on the experiences of righteous people.” (see Itqan, 2/434)

- However, in a hadith reported from Ibn Umar about 33 verses having the property of protection, the issue is attributed to the Prophet (pbuh).
The relevant verses are as follows:

Al-Baqara: 1-5 (Four verses are stated since the letter of Muqattaat are not taken into consideration), 255-257, al-Baqara: 284-286, al-Araf: 54-56, al-Isra: 110, as-Saaffat: 1-11, ar-Rahman: 33-34 al-Hashr: 21-24, al-Jinn: 1-4 (The number of the verses except Alif-Lam-Mim is 33.)

We could not find any evaluation whether this hadith reported by Ibn Najjar (see Suyuti, ad-Durrul-Mansur, 1/70-71) is sahih (sound) or not.

According to the information given in books, the verses of Hirz are as follows in their order in the Quran:

- the chapter of al-Fatiha

- the chapter of al-Baqara: verses 1-5; 163,164; 255-257 and 285, 286,

- the chapter of Aal-i Imran verse 18, and the part "innaddine indallah-il-Islam" of verse 19, verses 26, 27, 154,

- the chapter of al-An'am: verse 17,

- the chapter of al-A'raf: verses 54-56,

- the chapter of Fatir: verse 2,

- the chapter of Yasin: verse 83,

- the chapter of as-Saaffat: 1-11 (the first eleven verses) and verses 180-182,

- the chapter of ar-Rahman: verses 33-36,

- the chapter of al-Hadid: verses 1-5 (the first five),

- the chapter of al-Buruj: verses 20-22,

These verses are read for seven days in order to be saved from the evil of jinn and Satan, epilepsy; and magic and a person can have them on him.
