Is a marriage without the consent of the parents valid?

I'm 18 years old, and I was born and brought up in New York, and the person I wish to marry is living in India. He is 10 years older than me, and he is my maternal first cousin. I want to spend the rest of my life with him, and I will never settle for anyone else. My parents are in strong opposition of this, as they will do anything to keep us from marrying. I would like to know what steps I should take, and most importantly what my rights are in this situation, according to Islam.
