Is it permissible to shorten the first sunnahs of four rak’ahs as two rak’ahs in order to catch up with the congregation?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

What should one do if a fard prayer with congregation starts while he is performing a sunnah prayer?

In that case, he should complete it as two rak’ahs and join the congregation. He cannot follow the imam before finishing two rak’ahs. If it is the sunnah of the noon prayer, he should perform the sunnah prayer as qada after the fard as four rak’ahs. In addition, he should perform the last sunnah as two rak’ahs. The first two-prayer rak’ah is regarded as a nafilah prayer. If it is the sunnah of the afternoon prayer or night prayer, the sunnah prayer is not performed as qada after the fard prayer.

However, some sources state that a person who cannot perform the first sunnah of the night prayer can perform its qada after the last sunnah of the night prayer if he wishes.
