Can the places of the fard and sunnah prayers be changed? Is it permissible to perform the sunnah first and fard after that?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The last sunnah cannot be performed before the fard prayer. However, some sunnah prayers that are missed can performed as qada after fard prayers.

For instance, if a person cannot perform the first sunnah of the noon prayer so as not to miss the congregational prayer, he performs it as qada after the fard and two-rak’ah sunnah of the noon prayer. If a person cannot perform the first sunnah of the Friday prayer before the sermon, he performs it as qada after the two-rak’ah fard of the Friday prayer.

The sunnah prayers of the noon prayer and Friday prayer that are left after the second rak’ah are performed later as four rak’ahs as qada. The sunnahs of the other daily prayers are not performed as qada when they are missed.

For instance, the sunnahs of the afternoon and night prayers are not performed as qada after the fard if they are not performed before the fard. The sunnah of the morning prayer is not performed as qada after the fard prayer.

It is makruh to perform nafilah prayers after the sunset before performing the fard of the evening prayer because the evening prayer will have been delayed. In fact, it is virtuous to perform the evening prayer as early as possible. (see Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen, İslam İlmihali)
