Can the sunnah of the morning prayer be performed after the fard of the morning prayer?

The Details of the Question

If we see a congregation performing the morning (fajr) prayer and we join it without performing the Sunnah of the morning prayer, when do we need to perform the morning prayer? Or, is it necessary to abandon the Sunnah prayer in order to catch up with the congregation?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

If the sunnah of the morning prayer is not performed before the fard of the morning prayer, it is not performed. If it is possible to catch up with the fard, the sunnah is performed first; after that, one can follow the imam. However, if there is a risk of missing the congregation, it is necessary to skip the sunnah and to follow the imam.

If the sunnah of the morning prayer is not performed, it is not performed after fard as qada (missed) prayer.

However, some sunnahs of some daily prayers that are not performed on time are performed later as qada. For instance, if a person does not perform the first sunnah of the noon prayer in order to catch up with the congregation, he performs it after performing the fard and the two-rak’ah last sunnah of the noon prayer.

If the first sunnah of the Friday prayer cannot be performed before the sermon, it is performed as qada after the two-rak’ah fard of the Friday prayer. The first sunnahs of the noon and Friday prayers that are left in the middle after performing two rak’ahs are performed as qada as four rak’ahs similarly.
