Is it necessary for a woman to perform qada fasting for the day when she starts to menstruate when she is fasting?
Is it necessary for a woman to perform qada fasting for the day when she starts to menstruate when she is performing nafilah fasting or qada fasting? Does she have to perform fasting for two days when she breaks her qada fasting due to menstruation?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Qada is necessary for any nafilah fasting that is broken. It does not matter whether it is broken voluntarily or involuntarily. Therefore, if a woman starts to perform a nafilah fasting and she breaks it because of menstruation, she has to perform it again as qada according to the sound view. For, it is wajib not to give up a deed of worshipping that has been started and not to eliminate a religious duty that is undertaken.
According to Shafiis, a person who breaks a nafilah fasting does not have to perform it again because he/she has started a deed of worshipping that is not wajib. Qada is not necessary for the supererogatory worshipping that he/she has not fulfilled.
A woman who menstruates while performing qada fasting fasts only one day later. She does not have to fast two days.
