When is the time of intention for fasting in Ramadan and qada (missed) fasting. When does fasting start?

The Details of the Question

My friends and I were in a dilemma while we were talking today. I drink water and make the intention (niyyah) for fasting while the morning (fajr) adhan is being called, that is, while it is going on. However, some of my friends say that you have to make the intention before adhan starts. Which one is correct?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Intention (niyyah) for the fast of Ramadan, fasts of vow and supererogatory fasts whose time is specified can be made from the evening until the time of dawn the next day.

The intention for qada (missed) fast of Ramadan, for fasts of vow whose time is not specified, for supererogatory (nafilah) fasts that have been started and broken, and for the fasts of kaffarah (atonement) is made from the evening until the time of imsak. If the intention is made after this time, those fasts will not be valid.

According to Shafiis, it is permissible to make intention for supererogatory fasting until sunset as long as nothing that can invalidate fasting is made before intention.

* If a person makes intention to fast at night, but gives up his intention before the time of imsak, this giving up is valid.

* It is necessary to make a separate intention for each day of Ramadan fasting because nights intervene and the fasting of each day is regarded as a separate deed of worship.

* If a person makes intention to fast for a qada (missed) fasting after sunrise, that fast is not regarded as a qada fasting, but a supererogatory fasting. It is absolutely necessary to make intention before imsak for qada fasting.

* If a woman makes intention to fast at night while she is still menstruating, and her menstruation ends before the time of imsak, her intention is valid and she must fast that day.
