When is it necessary to intend for fasting in Ramadan and missed fasting outside Ramadan? When does fasting start?

The Details of the Question

While we were talking to some friends today, we had a disagreement. I drink water and make intention when the adhan for the morning (fajr) prayer is being called. However, some friends say, "It is necessary to have made intention before the adhan starts." Which one is true?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is possible to intend for fasting in Ramadan, fasting of vow whose time is determined and nafilah fasting from the evening until the time of duha.

Intention for the missed Ramadan fasting, fasting of vow whose time is not determined, broken nafilah fasting and fasting of atonement can be made between the evening and time of imsak. This kind of fasting is not valid if intention is made after this time period.

According to Shafiis, intention for nafilah fasting is permissible until the sunset unless something that invalidates fasting is done.

* If a person intends at night for any kind of fasting but gives up before imsak time, this giving up is valid.

* A separate intention is necessary for every day in Ramadan. For, night interferes and the fasting of each day is regarded as a separate deed of worshipping.

* If a person intends to perform a missed fasting after the sun rises, it is not regarded as missed fasting; it becomes a nafilah fasting. It is necessary to intend for missed fasting before imsak time.

* If a woman who is menstruating intends fasting at night and her menstruation ends before imsak, her intention is valid and she has to perform fasting.
