The Answer
Dear Brother / Sister,
A deed of worship is performed with intention; therefore, it is fard to make intention (niyyah) for fasting. Niyyah is in the heart of a person. It means to know and feel that he will fast tomorrow. It is not necessary but sunnah to say it with the tongue. Getting up to eat suhur at night is regarded as niyyah. One can say, "I intend to perform Ramadan fasting for Allah."
