If a person performs fasting after Ramadan due to being ill in Ramadan, will he get the same thawabs?

The Details of the Question

- If a person performs fasting as qada after Ramadan due to being ill in Ramadan, will he get the same thawabs?
- I suffer from jaundice. My doctor told me not fast in Ramadan this year. I will fast when I get well after Ramadan. Will I get the same thawabs?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The believers who cannot perform fasting in Ramadan due to a legitimate excuse like being ill and travelling can perform fasting as qada after Ramadan as a whole or intermittently.

They will not be held responsible for not fasting in Ramadan due to an excuse and they will inshallah get the same thawabs when they perform fasting as qada.

As a matter of fact, this issue is stated clearly in the Quran:

“Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur´an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.” (al-Baqara, 2/185)
