Can we read Yasin for the spirits of those who are alive?

The Details of the Question

- Can we read Yasin sincerely for the spirits of those who are alive along with those who are dead?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Yes, a Muslim can donate the thawabs of his deeds of worship to all believers and Muslims that are alive or dead.

According to Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah, a person can send the rewards of his good deeds like prayers, fasting, reciting the Quran, dhikr and hajj to others. (see Fathul-Qadir, 6/132; al-Bahrur-Raiq, 7/379- Shamila-; Raddul-Muhtar, 2/263)

In that case, the thawab of that deed of worship will reach the spirits of each one of them fully, without being divided, and will be recorded in their books of deeds. (see Ibn Hajar, Bughyatul-Mustarshidin, p. 97)

In order to make this fact understood better, Badiuzzaman Said Nursi states the following: A word that is uttered by a mouth reaches the ears of everybody in the world through radio fully; similarly, the thawabs of the prayers that are said and the deeds of worship that are performed will reach the spirits of those who are in the world and those in the graves fully. Then, he gives another example:

“When one lamp is lit, it is seen in thousands of mirrors. Similarly, when the chapter of Yasin is recited once and is donated to millions of spirits, each of them will receive one Yasin." (see Şualar, p. 576)

In that case, we can say, “O Allah! Send the thawab of our deeds of worship to our living or dead fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children, relatives, beloved ones, friends, teachers, those who have rights over us and the spirits of all Muslim men and women.” Thus, we can donate the thawabs to the spirits of all believers and Muslims of the past, today and the future.
