When a person performs qada fasting after Ramadan for a day that he/she missed due to a legitimate excuse and when this fast is broken, does he/she have to perform fasting again one day or two days?

The Details of the Question

Or is it enough to perform fasting only one day for the fasting missed in Ramadan? I would be glad if you would state your resource in the answer.

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Only qada (fasting for one day) is necessary for breaking a qada fasting remaining from Ramadan even if it is broken deliberately. For, it is fard to perform this fasting but it can be performed in any day of the year. The fasting broken deliberately in Ramadan necessitates kaffarah because it is fard to be performed in the month of Ramadan.

However, the fasting that needs to be performed as qada does not have to be performed in a certain month or on a certain day; one can perform it whenever he/she wishes it. Therefore, even if a person breaks a qada fasting from Ramadan deliberately, it is enough to perform it as one day.

Fasting is not invalidated if a person eats or drinks by forgetting that he/she is fasting whether it is Ramadan fasting, qada fasting or nafilah fasting. When he/she remembers that he is fasting, he/she has to stop eating or drinking and continue fasting. However, if he/she continues eating thinking that fasting has already been invalidated, he/she has to perform qada fasting for one day.
