Is it permissible to give kaffarah for oath to associations, foundations and charity organizations?

The Details of the Question

Is it permissible to give kaffarah for oath to charity organizations?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Kaffarah for oath necessitates giving a fitrah amount to ten poor people each or to give one poor person one fitrah amount for ten days, or to give food to ten poor people in the morning and evening (twice a day).

Those who cannot afford it need to perform fasting for three days. This kaffarah is stated in the Quran:

"Allah will not call you to account for what is void in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed then indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths ye have sworn. But keep to your oaths. Thus doth Allah make clear to you His Signs, that ye may be grateful." (al-Maida, 5/89)

Accordingly, it is better to give it to the needy people around but if those charity organizations meet the needs of food and clothing of the poor and if you are sure of it, it is permissible to give kaffarah for oath to those organizations.

It is religiously permissible to give kaffarah for oath to associations, institutions and charity funds that are known to collect kaffarah for oath in a fund, that distribute it to the poor and that are managed by reliable people.
