Will you give information about the hadith related to looking for lost property in the mosque?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Hz. Burayda narrates:

"A man announced his lost property in the mosque and called out, "Who saw a red camel?" When the Prophet (pbuh) heard it, he said,

"May it not be restored to you! The mosques are built for what they are meant." [Muslim, Masajid 80, (569)]

This hadith prohibits announcing lost property in the mosque. Scholars have different views regarding the issue. Some say it is haram while others say it is makruh.

It is also regarded makruh to talk loudly in the mosque. Abu Hanifa and some scholars regard it permissible for the issues that men need like ilm, cases, etc. to be talked about loudly in the mosque.

The hadith prohibits announcing lost property aloud in the mosque. However, it is permissible for a person to look for his property in the mosque quietly if he has lost it.
