The Details of the Question

- My beard is thin; it does not grow in some places on my face; it is very thin in some of the parts where it grows and it is normal in other parts.
- Is it permissible to use beard serum to fill the areas where hair does not grow and to regulate the areas where it grows thin?
- Besides, this beard serum contains ethyl alcohol; is it permissible to use it, that is, to apply it to the face?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The Prophet (pbuh) listed growing a beard among the deeds in accordance with the nature (creation values). (see Bukhari, Libas, 62; Muslim, Taharah, 56; Abu Dawud, Taharah, 29; Nasai, Ziynah, 1)

As a matter of fact, he himself grew a beard and took care of it well; he would trim the part more than a fist length.

Considering the hadiths regarding the issue and the practices of the Companions, Islamic scholars agree that growing a beard is a natural deed to be done and a recommended sunnah, but they have different opinions on the decree of shaving the beard. While some scholars say it is haram, others regard it as makruh.

The generally accepted rule of methodology stating that “to say that something is haram, the prohibitive evidence regarding it must be definite in terms of proof and indication” shows that the second view is more appropriate.

Accordingly, it is possible to say that a person who grows a beard in order to follow the Prophet (pbuh) and cares for his beard in accordance with the sunnah will receive thawabs for that deed but that those who shave their beards because they cannot do it due to any reason will not regarded to have sinned though it is contrary to the sunnah.

If a person who loses his beard or whose beard is thin feels psychologically uncomfortable in public and is afflicted spiritually, he can use the serum / lotion mentioned in the question to normalize his beard. However, it is appropriate to use lotions that do not contain alcohol.
