What duas (supplications) can a woman read when she is in menstruation?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The chapter of al-Fatiha can be read with the intention of dua.  In addition, the verses of the Quran that resemble duas (supplications) in the Quran can be read with the intention of dua, not with the intention of reading the Quran. For instance, the following verse can be read: "Rabbana atina fiddunya hasanatan wa filakhirati hasanatan wa qina adhabannar."

Similarly, a person who hears some good news can say, “Alhamdulillah!” A person who hears some bad news can say, “Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi rajiun.” (Ibrahim Halabi, Halabi, Saghir, p. 37-39; Ibn Abidin, Hashiyatu Raddil-Muhtar, 1/293)

Imam Malik regards it permissible since the woman who is menstruating is excused and since she needs the Quran. However, after her menstruation ends, she cannot read the Quran before she makes ghusl. (Zuhayli, al-Fiqhul-Islami, 1/471)

On the other hand, she can make dhikr and read supplications; there is no drawback to them. It is even appropriate for a woman to turn toward the qiblah and make dhikr and read supplications from time to time when she is in menstruation. Thus, she will be fed spiritually on the days when she menstruates.

There is no drawback to reading various supplications like qunut, saying subhanallah and la ilaha illallah, saying salawat to and greeting the Prophet (pbuh) for women who are in menstruation and puerperium or for junub people. Women who are in menstruation and puerperium must not read the Quran but they can listen to it.

There are no limitations regarding supplications for women who are in menstruation; they can read any supplication.
