Is it permissible to close the eyes during the prayer?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Closing the eyes during salah is makruh (abominable). In a glorius hadith, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Anyone from you who performs salah should not close his/her eyes".
For, looking at the place of prostration during the salah is sunnah. Closing the eyes means giving up this sunnah. However this makrooh isTanzihi, (refers to the acts that are detested in Islamic Shariah) and is not a sin.
However, closing the eyes in prayer is permissible in order not to see something which is not permissible to look or when there is something that catches attention and to ensure khushu which is the spiritual pleasure of prayer with the intention of disconnecting the sight from visible objects. There is no karahah (disgrace) in doing it.
