Will you give some information about the ta’lik (mu’allaq) hadiths in Imam Bukhari’s book?
- As far as I have learned, these hadiths are given without chains of narrators. (Hüseyin Ece, Buhari, p.177)
- Moreover, a substantial number (1341) of them are included in Bukhari’s Sahih.
- Why are these hadiths without chains of narrators and how are they in terms of reliability?
Dear Brother / Sister,
Mu’allaq is a term meaning a hadith in which the author does not mention one or more narrators in the chain of narrators.
The number of such mu’allaq narrations, especially in Bukhari’s al-Jamius-Sahih, is 1341 according to a calculation; most of them are given in other parts of the Sahih together with their chains of narrators; only 160 of them are not found in any part of the work.
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani identified the muttasil (unsuspended=uninterrupted) narrations of the mu’allaq hadiths in Bukhari’s al-Jamius-Sahih; he mentioned them in the relevant parts of Fathul-Bari and in the introduction of this sharh named Hadyus-Sari; he also collected them in his book entitled Taghliqut-Ta’lik.
Bukhari reported such hadiths using either passive or active voice.
If the narrations with active voice come from a Companion, they are sound according to Bukhari. If it is reported from a narrator after the Companions, its attribution to the narrator is sound. In that case, the narrator and the narrators before him should be examined and judged accordingly.
Even if those reported with passive voice are sound, it is understood that they do not comply with the criteria prescribed by the classifier or are transmitted with meaning or are weak.
