Dear Brother / Sister,
"Cleanliness is from belief." There are a lot of hadiths narrated regarding the issue. (Muslim, Taharah 1; Darimi, Wudu 2; Musnad, 5/342,344; Ajluni, Kashful-Khafa, 291)
Yes, cleanliness is from belief. However, the cleanliness that is part of belief does not consist of material cleanliness only, unlike what is generally thought. The cleanliness that is part of belief consists of two types of cleanliness: material and spiritual cleanliness that can be expressed as the cleanliness of the body and the cleanliness of the heart.
It is not easy to say that a person who does not act honestly toward the people around him, who does not feel happiness due others’ happiness and on the contrary feels disturbed, who despises worshipping and worshippers has a clean heart. Such a person needs to accept eliminating these bad feelings in his heart as spiritual cleanliness and eliminating the impurities on his body as material cleanliness; thus, he should think that he will attain the cleanliness from belief by undergoing spiritual and material cleanliness. The Prophet (pbuh) stated the following about these two types of cleanliness:
"An-nazafatu minal iman!" (Cleanliness is from belief...)
In another hadith, he said,
"Islam is built on the foundation of cleanliness."
Thus, he indicated that cleanliness of the heart and body was the foundation of Islam.
In that case, we cannot think one of them separately from the other. For, the cleanliness of the heart will bring about the feeling of worshipping and the cleanliness of the body will bring about the material cleanliness of the body and clothes, which will enable worshipping to be valid. The worshipping of a person whose body and clothes are not clean will not be valid.
