Is there a supplication (dua) to read for a woman to ease childbirth when she is pregnant and during delivery?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Delivery can be an operation that is risky for life. Such an important incident cannot be coped with only supplication. It is necessary to take material measures first; that is, it is necessary to see a midwife, a doctor and to be examined. After that, one can take spiritual measures, that is, to pray.

A doctor alone is not a definite means of cure; similarly, supplication alone is not a definite means of cure. For, our Lord orders us to do both, that is, to take both material and spiritual measures. A person who does one of them and neglects the other is regarded to have done something incomplete. He/she can achieve only what a bird with one wing can achieve.

The Prophet (pbuh) gives the following advice related to the spiritual measure, that is, the supplication to read, as follows:

"First ayat al-kursiyy is read; then, the chapters of al-Falaq and an-Nas are read with the intention of giving a healthy and easy birth. After that, the following verse is read:"

"Inna rabbakumullahulladhi khalaqas samawati wal arda fi sittati ayyamin thummastawa alal arshi yughshil laylan nahara yatlubuhu hathithaw wash shamsa wal qamara wan nucuma musakhkharatim bi amrih ala lahul khalqu wal amr tabarakallahu rabbul alamin."(al-A'raf, 7/54)

(Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o´er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!)

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) had this supplication read when his daughter Hz. Fatima gave birth; thus, she had healthy children. The blessed children, Hz. Hasan and Husayn, were born with such supplications.

It is a nice deed to thank Allah and to help the poor for a person when he hears the good news of having a child.
