Some people say that if you take a bath in the evening or at night toward the morning, the devil will touch you and you might lose your mind. To what extent is it true?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

There are certain times when bathing is not considered appropriate in terms of good manners because they are the times when the devils disperse. However, it is not a sin to take a bath at those times, and you should take a bath when you need to. Other times should be preferred if possible. However, those who take a bath at those times do not lose their minds.

BATHROOM MANNERS

1- We should clean our teeth with miswak (Islamic toothbrush) before we bathe.

2- We should take a bath with nice thoughts like being clean when we pray in the presence of Allah.

3- We should enter the bathroom stepping first with the left foot.

4- When entering, we should say “In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful, I seek refuge in Allah from all kinds of dirt and the evil of the banished devil.” (Bukhari, Wudu', 9, Daawat, 14; Muslim, Hayd, 122, 123)

5- We should close the door so that nobody sees inside the bathroom.

6- When bathing especially in a public bathing place, we should cover our private parts and wear a loincloth.

7- We should first wash our right and left shoulders.

8- We should not waste the water.

9- When we feel hot water on our skins, we should think of Hell and compare the hellfire with this hotness of water.

10- We should not talk while bathing; we should not recite verses of the Quran or sing religious songs .

11- We should not enter the bathroom towards the evening and between the evening prayer and night prayer.

12- We should not pour water on us while standing but while sitting.

13- We should not urinate or defecate in the place of bathing. Our Prophet warns us about it as follows:

“One of you should not urinate in the place where he bathes. If he does, he should not make wudu (ablution) in that place. Most of the delusions come from it.” (Tirmidhi, Taharah 17; Nasai, Taharah 6)

14- Those who use the bathroom should wash and clean the bathroom. There should not be any unpleasant sight in the bathroom. All the remains of soap, hair, and dirty water should be removed. The dirty clothes should not be hung and should not be left as dirty.

15- Everybody should have their own loincloths and use them.

16- Before bathing if one has long hair and mustache, he should trim and cut them.

17- It is mustahab (recommended) to pluck and shave the hair of your armpits once in maximum forty days

18- It is sunnah to remove the pubic hair once in maximum forty days.

19- It is sunnah to have kohl three times on the right eye, two times on the left eye, and to begin from the right one.

20- We should bury or burn the nails and hair we cut by wrapping them in something.
