If a person performs a fard prayer of four rak'ahs as five rak'ahs by mistake and remembers it after saluting, does this prayer become valid or does it have to be performed again?

The Details of the Question

If a person performs a fard prayer of four rak'ahs as five rak'ahs by mistake and remembers it after saluting, does this prayer become valid or does it have to be performed again?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is fard to sit in the last rak'ah of all fard prayers. If a person stands up without sitting in the last rak'ah and if he has prostrated for the fifth rak'ah, the prayer has to be performed again since a fard has been abandoned. However, if he sits at the end of the fourth rak'ah and stands up for the fifth rak'ah, his prayer is valid.
