If a person does not perform fasting in Ramadan arbitrarily and without intending, does kaffarah become necessary for him?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

If a person does not intend to fast in Ramadan and eats during the day, only qada (performing fasting one day for each day) becomes necessary; kaffarah is not necessary. For, kaffarah is the penalty of breaking a fast that has been started.

It is necessary for a person who does not perform fasting in Ramadan to perform fasting one day for each day after Ramadan.

However, our Prophet (peace be upon him) has said that in order to attain the reward of a missed day of fasting during Ramadan, even if a person fasts every day outside of Ramadan, they still will not attain this reward:

"Whoever does not fast for one day in Ramadan without a valid excuse or illness, even if they fast for a lifetime, they will not make up for it." (Tirmidhi, Sawm, 27; Abu Dawood, Sawm, 38; Ibn Majah, Siyam, 14)

Therefore, neglecting to fast during Ramadan without a valid excuse is a great sin. It is both a disrespect to the month of Ramadan and an insult to all Muslims.
