How is prayer (dua) said after khatm al-Quran? What chapters are to be read before the prayer of khatm al-Quran?
I read the whole Quran but I do not remember the chapters that are necessary to be read in order after khatm. I feel confused about them. Will you tell me what chapters to read and in which order? I also read the meaning (translation) of the Quran along with its Arabic original. Am I regarded to have completed a khatm al-Quran?
Dear Brother / Sister,
It is sunnah to read the chapters of an-Nas and al-Fatiha and the first five verses of the chapter of al-Baqara before starting to say the prayer of khatm (reading the whole Quran). It is stated that Ubayy bin Ka'b stated the following regarding the issue:
"When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) read the chapter of an-Nas, he would start reading the chapter of al-Fatiha and the first part of the chapter of al-Baqara up to the verse "wa ulaika humul-muflihun"; then, he would say the prayer of khatm and stood up." (Suyuti, Itqan, 1/313)
It is stated that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) did like that so as not to leave the Quran in an abandoned state. (Qurtubi, Tafsir, I / 30).
The thawab of khatm al-Quran by reading the original Arabic form is different and the thawab reading its translation is different.
KHATM PRAYER
The prayer said after reading the Quran from the beginning to the end is called "khatm prayer (dua)". We see that many hadiths that encouraged Muslims to read the whole Quran were reported from the Prophet. The Prophet states the following in a hadith regarding the issue "A person who reads the whole Quran has an accepted prayer." (Suyuti Jamius-Saghir, II, 175) Thus, he states that the prayer of a person who reads the whole Quran by heart or by looking at the Quran is accepted in the eye of Allah and he states in another hadith that Allah “will grant a tree in Paradise” to such people. (Suyuti Jamius-Saghir, I, 96).
There is a narration from Ibn Kathir about Hz. Prophet saying a prayer after khatm al-Quran. Pointing out the hadith "The owner of the Quran has an accepted prayer. If Allah wishes, He gives it to him in the world; or, if He wishes, He delays it to the hereafter" reported from Jabir b. Abdullah, Ibnul-Jazari says, “It is mustahab for a person who reads the whole Quran to say a prayer according to the apparent meaning of this hadith. (Ibnul-Jazari, Taqribun-Nashr, 194).
Qurtubi includes the following narrations in his tafsir in order to state the importance of this issue: Hakam b. Utayba narrates: “Some people informed me when they read the whole Quran and said to me, ‘We will finish reading the whole Quran and we want you to join the khatm prayer because when the whole Quran is read, mercy comes down or divine mercy is present during khatm prayer.’” (Qurtubi, Tafsir, I, 31). Stating that the Companions gave special importance to joining khatm prayer, Mujahid says, "The Companions would join a khatm prayer expecting that divine mercy would come down." (Suyuti, Itqan, I, 311). According to a hadith reported from Anas b. Malik, when Hz. Prophet completed a khatm, he would summon Ahl al-Bayt and say a khatm prayer. (al-Furi, Kanzul-Ummal, I, 392). According to the narration of Ibn Mas'ud, Hz. Prophet would summon Ahl al-Bayt, say a prayer and they would say, "Amin". (Sahawi, Jamalul-Qurra, 34 ff)
The Companions imitated the Prophet regarding this issue as they did regarding all issues. When Anas b. Malik made a khatm, he would call his children and neighbors and say prayers together expecting the reward of khatm. (Qurtubi, Tafsir, I, 30). Acting upon this example and similar ones, the scholars state that it is mustahab to pray together after a khatm with the family and friends. (Qurtubi, Tafsir, I, 30; Suyuti, Itqan, I, 311)
