Dear Brother / Sister,
Maladaptive Daydreaming is a condition generally known as “uncontrollable daydreaming.”
It is defined as a person experiencing an excessive and uncontrolled habit of daydreaming, which negatively affects his daily life. Unlike normal daydreaming, “maladaptive daydreaming” can seriously disrupt a person’s daily life.
However, only a psychiatrist, not the individuals themselves, can determine whether a person has such a disorder. Therefore, if you have self-diagnosed, it is advisable to consult a specialist as soon as possible for confirmation. because simply daydreaming for long periods is not the only criterion for a diagnosing of daydreaming disorder. Other signs such as the following are also necessary.
- Forming detailed, complex, and realistic fantasy scenarios that can last for hours;
- Seeking refuge in a fantasy world to cope with difficult emotions or stress;
- Being unable to control the urge to daydream and feeling distressed by it;
- Becoming more attached to characters or events in the fantasy world than to those in real life, and as a result, experiencing disruptions of daily tasks or damage to social relationships due to daydreaming
What are the causes of Maladaptive Daydreaming?

Daydreaming can be a way for individuals to cope with challenging emotional situations.
Loneliness or Social Isolation
Fantasy can provide a satisfaction that is lacking in real-life relationships.
Mental Disorders
It may be linked to conditions such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Biological Factors
Imbalances in the brain’s reward mechanism can increase the desire to daydream.
How can you get rid of Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder?
Watch Yourself
Analyze your daydreaming habits. When, where, and under what circumstances do you start daydreaming? Identify the triggers that precede daydreaming; for example, do you daydream when you are lonely, stressed, or anxious, or do you also daydream when you are happy?
Make a Daily Plan and Manage Your Time Effectively.
Set meaningful goals for yourself. Make sure you have daily, weekly, and monthly plans. If you have free time, fill it with more productive activities. Instead of daydreaming, choose a task that will keep you busy. Encourage yourself to focus constructively by setting daily goals.
Mental Techniques and Exercises
You can practice breathing exercises to focus on the present moment.
Thought-stopping techniques: When you notice yourself starting to daydream, try telling yourself to “stop” and directing your attention to another activity.
Finding Alternative Activities
Productive activities, such as writing or drawing, can help you channel your need for daydreaming in a more constructive way.
Physical Exercise
Exercising is a great way to focus your mental energy.
Daydreaming, when managed properly, can improve skills such as productivity and problem-solving. However, when it becomes uncontrollable, it is important to seek support. If it seriously affects other areas of your life, you might consider seeking help from a therapist or psychiatrist.
Remember: Be patient with yourself; ask Allah for patience in this matter and seek refuge in Him; try to move forward step by step. God Almighty states the following in the chapter of al-Anam:
“Say: ‘Who is it that delivereth you from the dark recesses of land and sea, when ye call upon Him in humility and silent terror: ‘If He only delivers us from these (dangers), (we vow) we shall truly show our gratitude’.” (al-An’am, 6/63)
Changing these kinds of habits can take time.
