Why is the witr prayer performed after tarawih prayer performed in congregation? Is it not possible to perform it at home?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

When tarawih prayer, which is sunnah, is performed in congregation, the witr prayer performed after it is also performed in congregation. On the other days, the last sunnah of the night (isha) prayer is performed alone; therefore, the witr prayer performed after it is also performed alone.

A person who performs the night prayer in congregation and does not perform tarawih prayer needs to perform the witr prayer alone.

The witr prayer is performed in congregation only in Ramadan. The imam reads qira'ah aloud in this prayer. According to the preferred view, qunut supplication is read silently both by the imam and the congregation. It is makruh to perform witr prayer in congregation in the months except Ramadan.

Is it permissible to perform the witr prayer in congregation in the months except Ramadan?

It is makruh. It is makruh if it is done by inviting one another like in the other nafilah prayers except tarawih. It is not makruh if one or two people follow a person who will perform the witr prayer and form a congregation.

The Prophet sometimes led the witr prayer to Hz. Aisha. When Hz. Abu Bakr died, Hz. Umar led the witr prayer on the day they buried him. It is understood that it is makruh to perform witr prayer in congregation in the months except Ramadan all the time. The view that it is not makruh if it is performed occasionally and without inviting people is preferred. (see Nimetü'l-İslam, the Chapter about Prayers, p. 360)
