Is prayer invalidated if a person prostrates with his prayer cap covering his forehead?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is necessary to be careful while prostrating because if the cap, turban, etc. on the head covers the forehead, it is regarded makruh.

It is not permissible to perform a prayer if the forehead is covered by something thick like a turban that prevents feeling the hardness of the ground. For, what is meant by prostration is to put the forehead on the ground and to want to be close to Lord of the Realms with one’s humbleness and weakness.

If a person puts the sleeve of his garment, or the end of his cloak, gown, etc. on the place of prostration in order to protect his face from the soil, it is makruh. If he does it to protect his turban and garment, it is not makruh. (Bahr ar-Raiq / Ibn Nujaym; Celal Yıldırım, Kaynaklarıyla İslam Fıkhı, Uysal Kitabevi: 1/366-367)
